The NWSL season has begun and on Sunday night, the Seattle Reign will host the Washington Spirit at Lumen Field as both teams play their first game. For the third consecutive season, the teams will begin the season against each other. Last year, the Washington Spirit came up short of making it to postseason play after dropping the final game of the season to the North Carolina Courage in a close 1-0 loss. The team finished the season with a record of 7-6-9 and missed postseason play despite having the fewest losses of any team in the NWSL. The team was playoff eligible the entire season until the final game and finished one point out of playoff contention.

The Seattle Reign finished the 2023 regular season with a record of 9-8-5 for a total of 32 points. Despite finishing the season just one point ahead of the final qualifying team, the Reign found themselves in the NWSL final against NJ/NY Gotham FC, falling just short. NWSL and USWNT fan favorite Megan Rapinoe played just five minutes in the final game of her career, tearing her Achillies tendon.
The most recent game between the Reign and Spirit was played in Oct. 2023 and resulted in a scoreless draw.
